Minor Eye Conditions

This is a FREE NHS service available at Blink Opticians. This means that if you have had a recent problem with your eyes, such as red eyes, sore eyes, or problems with your vision, you can be seen by an eye specialist at a time and location that is convenient for you. This can reduce the time you have to wait to be treated for a minor eye condition.

What Eye Conditions Can Be Treated?

  • Red eyes or eyelids
  • Dry eyes, or gritty and uncomfortable eyes
  • Irritation and inflammation of the eyes
  • Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye
  • Recently occuring flashes or floaters
  • Ingrowing eyelashes
  • Recent and sudden loss of vision
  • Foreign body in the eye

What will happen during my appointment?

  • The optometrist will examine your eyes.
  • They will discuss your medical history and explore any symptoms you may have been experiencing.
  • Don’t forget to take a list of all current medications and your most recent pair of glasses with you to your appointment.
  • You are likely to be treated during your appointment, although you may be referred to your GP if your eye condition is related to your general health.
  • If required, you may also be referred to hospital.
  • Following your appointment, the optometrist will send the results to your GP to ensure your medical records are updated. A record of all appointments will also be kept to monitor and improve the service.
Your information will be held confidentially and not shared with a third party without your prior permission.

Please note that a MECS examination is not a routine eye test. If you have a major eye condition that is currently being monitored by an optometrist, this can not be covered under the minor eye condition scheme. If you are unsure whether your symptoms can be treated, please contact your local optometrist.

Who is eligible for MECS?

If you are registered with a local GP, you are eligible to use this service. You may be referred via your GP practice or by simply contacting an accredited local optometrist that is registered to provide the MECS Scheme and asking to be assessed as part of their Minor Eye Conditions Service.
